These release notes explain several last-minute features of Release 7.0 of the GCC Technologies® UltraDrive™ and FX software.
••• DriveManager 7.0 •••
GCC has renamed its drive management software to DriveManager (from DiskManager). All references to DiskManager in the documentation imply DriveManager.
DriveManager 7.0 is fully compatible with Apple® System Software Release 7.0. Support has been added for Virtual Memory (VM), 32-bit addressing and Balloon Help.
GCC highly recommends that your Macintosh® has more than 2Mb of RAM installed when using System 7.0 in conjunction with GCC's partitions. The number of partitions automatically mounted will be very limited when using only 2Mb of RAM.
Due to space constraints, GCC no longer includes a full set of Apple System Software on the UltraDrive "Applications" Diskette. Therefore, portions of the section entitled "Software Information" (Chapter 3) of the UltraDrive User's Manual may not apply. To reinstall Apple System Software on your UltraDrive, please refer to the Apple System Software Diskettes and documentation that was included with your Macintosh.
Please note that "Shut Down" has been added to the "File" menu in DriveManager. This menu item allows the Macintosh to be "Shut Down" directly from DriveManager.
The UltraDrive "Installation" Diskette contains only DriveManager and an Apple System File. When starting your Macintosh from the UltraDrive "Installation" Diskette, DriveManager replaces Finder as the Startup application. You must "Shut Down" rather than "Quit" when starting your Macintosh from this diskette.
Please note that the "Park Heads" button has been removed from the DriveManager's main window, since UltraDrives now park heads automatically. In its place we have added an "Eject" button to support the UltraDrive 50R removable drive. For all UltraDrives that are non-removable, this button is greyed out.
••• Upgrading your hard drive •••
DriveManager 7.0 is fully backward compatible with previous versions of manager software. This means that any UltraDrive or FX owner can start using DriveManager 7.0 without disturbing the data already stored on the disk. When running DriveManager 7.0 for the first time on a unit using an older version of the software, the Manager may ask you whether you wish to update the software. Simply click the Update button, then Quit and restart your Apple Macintosh using Shut Down or Restart from the Special menu. From then on, you will be using the new version of the hard disk drivers. Please note that updating the software does not disturb any files you have stored on the disk.
••• UltraDrive 50R •••
If you hold down the mouse button of your Macintosh when it is first starting up it will eject the UltraDrive 50R cartridge.
If your Macintosh tries to start from a UltraDrive 50R cartridge which does not have a valid System Folder on it, it will eject the cartridge and attempt to start up from another drive. If you wish to start up from another cartridge, insert the desired cartridge, and press the start button on the UltraDrive 50R. If your Macintosh has started up from another drive, you will need to Restart your Macintosh so that it starts up from the UltraDrive 50R.
••• Converting from a single volume to a partitioned volume •••
Note: This section does not apply to the UltraDrive 50R.
Your drive has been pre-formatted, and initialized as a single-volume device. Also, all of the necessary software has been installed to allow you to use your hard disk right away. To use GCC’s exclusive Partitioning feature designed specifically for GCC drives, you will need to use the DriveManager to re-initialize your drive as a partitioned device. Initializing your drive will erase all of the existing data, including system files, applications, and data files. Therefore, you will need to back it up prior to initializing. After backing up your data, follow the steps in your user’s manual to partition your hard disk. After you have created the partitions you desire, re-install all of your software onto the newly created partitions.
••• QuickSpool II and QuickEnvelope •••
QuickSpool™ II is a software utility that allows you to print in background to a serial printer, like the Apple® ImageWriter®, and GCC Technologies WriteMove® and WriteImpact™ printers. QuickEnvelope™ is a desk accessory that makes envelope printing easy on any type of printer capable of printing envelopes. Both of these utilities are provided on your UltraDrive Applications floppy. They are not pre-installed onto your UltraDrive. Please follow the simple directions in the respective manuals in order to install them onto your UltraDrive.
••• DriveManager On-line Specifications •••
GCC has included technical specifications for GCC hard drives in the 7.0 release of DriveManager. The menu item “Specifications” under the File menu will provide you this information in an easy-to-use format.
••• Apple’s “Startup Device” CDEV •••
If you set a partition to be the Startup Partition using Apple’s “Startup Device” in the Control Panel, you must also set that partition to be the startup partition using the Options features in the DriveManager. Refer to your user’s manual on how to set, or change the startup partition.
••• Passwording •••
Setting the Volume Password on a drive using the Password button in the main window of the DriveManager (see the user’s manual) will allow that password to be used to access any passworded partition on the same drive, regardless of the partition’s password. The volume password will override a partition password. If you do not set the volume password, then it would be possible for an unauthorized person to set your volume password, thus giving them access to your passworded partitions. We strongly recommend that you set your volume password prior to passwording any partitions.
••• Limitation on creating partitions •••
The documentation indicates that the limit on the number of partitions that can be created is 32. The actual limit on the number of partitions that can be created is a total of 31 Macintosh, A/UX, and ProDOS partitions.
When creating a Macintosh partition using the DriveManager, do not lock it immediately after creation. You should first return to the Finder so that DeskTop file can be created after which it may be locked using either the DriveManager or the GCC Partitions desk accessory.
••• Limitation on the number of HFS partitions mounted at one time •••
Due to memory limitations in Apple’s Finder, we strongly recommend that you do not mount more than 7 partitions at one time. Mounting more than 7 partitions may lead to problems in the Finder.
When using the DriveManager to create Macintosh partitions, each partition created is automatically mounted on the desktop. If you create more than 7 partitions without unmounting any, you may receive a message saying “There isn’t enough Finder memory to work with disk ‘Partition Name’.” If this happens, your partition has been created; however, due to memory limitations, it could not be mounted on the desktop. You will need to unmount another partition prior to mounting this one.
••• Setting and Changing the Startup Volume •••
The first Macintosh HFS partition that you create is automatically set to be the Startup partition. Startup partitions may not be password protected, and password protected partitions may not be set to be the Startup partition. The Startup partition is automatically mounted at startup. If you attempt to delete the Startup partition you will be warned that there should always be a startup partition on each drive which has Macintosh HFS partitions. However if you remove the “Startup Partition” on a drive connected to any CPU other than a Macintosh Plus, then none of your partitions will mount when you start up, or appear in the GCC Partitions desk accessory, until the DriveManager is run.
Apple’s “Startup Device” is not supported on a Macintosh Plus. If your system is set to start up from your GCC Startup partition and you do not want to, you can do one of two things. The simplest is set the device you would like to start up from to the highest SCSI ID number. Otherwise you may use the DriveManager to remove the “Startup” option from your Startup Partition by clicking on the Options button and deselecting the “Set Startup” option.
••• Creating A/UX Partitions •••
Using the DriveManager to create an A/UX partition will allow that partition to be recognized by Apple’s A/UX operating system. The following are the basic steps needed to mount the partition under A/UX; you should refer to your A/UX documentation if you have any questions.
1) Using the DriveManager, check the current interleave value of the hard disk by selecting the drive and clicking on the Interleave button. Record this value for later use.
2) Create an A/UX partition by following the directions in the user’s manual. Under A/UX, the partition created by the DriveManager will appear as /dev/dsk/cnd0s0, where n is the SCSI ID of the drive.
3) Under A/UX, execute dp /dev/dsk/cnd0s31. This will present a menu of functions, enter P. Record the A/UX partition’s logical size for the partition you created using the DriveManager (e.g. 200000 @ 0). Enter q to quit. (Note: you will be shown several partitions which you did not see in DiskManager; they are created by DriveManager and contain driver software and other required information; do not modify them.)
4) Execute mkfs /dev/dsk/cnd0s0 size a b, where size is the logical size of the partition (e.g. 200000), and a and b are determined according to the instructions in the A/UX documentation for the mkfs command. The interleave value was determined in step 1.
5) Execute fsck /dev/dsk/cnd0s0, create a directory to mount the device on (e.g. mkdir /UD80S), and mount the partition onto that directory (e.g. mount /dev/dsk/cnd0s0 /UD80S).
If you would like to create more than one A/UX partition you should do so from the A/UX operating system and follow the guidelines in Apple’s documentation. Creating and mounting multiple A/UX partitions on a single drive is not for the novice and you will need to read the documentation carefully.
••• Creating ProDOS Partitions •••
ProDOS 4.0 is limited to accessing partitions of 32 MB or less, while higher revisions of ProDOS or GS/OS may be able to access larger partitions. You should therefore refer to your ProDOS documentation before creating partitions larger than 32 MB. Additionally, ProDOS 4.0 cannot access more than a total of 7 partitions on all hard drives.
Again, revisions to ProDOS may expand that limit, so please refer to your documentation if you need to create more than 7 partitions.
After creating a ProDOS partition using GCC’s DriveManager as described in the user’s manual, you should connect your drive to your Apple II, and use ProDOS to mount from a floppy disk. Make sure that the SCSI.DRIVER is in the DRIVERS folder. After ProDOS loads, you will be notified that “This volume was initialized for another operating system and can’t be read by GS/OS (or ProDOS). Do you want to initialize it?” You should select the Initialize button. Enter the name for the volume, and select the OK button. This will happen for each ProDOS partition. The partitions will now be accessible, and appear on your desktop (under GS/OS).
We recommend that if you will be using a GCC drive on both an Apple II and a Macintosh, that you only use GCC’s DriveManager (running on a Macintosh) to create and delete the ProDOS partitions.
••• MacTools Deluxe •••
• The MacTools Deluxe diskettes and the manual are included with your UltraDrive. MacTools Deluxe has not been installed on your hard disk; therefore, you will need to reference the MacTools Deluxe documentation for proper installation.
• The MacTools Deluxe encryption program provided by GCC does not support DES encryption. It is a violation of Federal laws to ship DES encryption outside the U.S. and Canada. • MacTools Deluxe Partition: Since GCC offers true SCSI partitioning as opposed to the file-based partitioning found in MacTools Deluxe Partition, we recommend that you use GCC’s DriveManager to create partitions and the GCC Partitions desk accessory to access them. Use of the MacTools Deluxe Partition utility is permitted, but both partitioning utilities should not be used at the same time. Please note that GCC's volume partitioning software does not support the UltraDrive 50R.
• Support and Upgrades: Central Point Software will be providing technical support for MacTools Deluxe and handling any upgrades or addendums. Please call Central Point Software at 503-690-8080 with any questions or problems regarding MacTools Deluxe. While GCC’s Technical Support group is familiar with MacTools Deluxe, they are not able to offer the level of support that Central Point Software can provide.

In addition to applications, SelectShare™ includes desk accessories, CDEVs, and INITs. None of the SelectShare software has been installed into your system and thus you will need to cpoy INITs and CDEVs into your System Folder and use the Font/DA Mover to install desk accessories. While GCC Technologies distributes this software as a service to our customers and the authors, we cannot provide technical support.
